Description:
This section of the A Celebration of Women in Engineering website provides tips and teaching practices to make the general classroom a positive experience for boys and girls. Based on our own experiences as adults, we often hold biases and stereotypes that unknowingly influence our work in the classroom. Studies of multiple classrooms show that teachers of all ages, gender, ethnic and racial backgrounds unconsciously make boys the center of instruction and give them more frequent and focused attention. Increased teacher attention then leads to enhanced student performance. Meanwhile girls take on the role of a passive observer rather than an active participant in the classroom and as a result, may not learn as much. This resource provides strategies that may help you make your classroom more gender-equitable. This resource is appropriate for all users, particularly for girls and women, because it addresses concerns relating to gender-bias and/or discrimination. |
