Description: Held at the University of South Florida's St. Petersberg, Florida campus, this three week camp is for girls entering the ninth grade. Campers will learn about the ocean through hands-on activities, experiments, field trips, interviews with professional oceanographers, and research projects. The Oceanography Camp for Girls was developed to inspire and motivate young women entering high school to consider career opportunities in the sciences. Each three week program provides hands-on, real-world experiences in both laboratory and field environments. Under the interdisciplinary umbrella of oceanography, participants are directly involved in disciplines in which women and minorities are most often underrepresented -- chemistry, geology, physics, engineering and mathematics. This resource is appropriate for all users, particularly for girls and women, because it targets girls or women, and informs girls and women about activities targeted at them such as summer camps, educational programs, scholarships, internships, professional development, and professional organizations.
