Description: Created by WEpan (Women in Engineering Programs and Advocates Network), this activity involves students in the design, materials selection, and creation of a sneaker sole. The goal is for students to understand the basics of engineering that go into the design of a sneaker. This unit explores the types of materials used in the bottom of a sneaker. It connects how engineers think about selecting appropriate materials fordesign needs. Students build a model using a variety of everyday items with the same characteristics found in actual sneaker soles. Includes resource page and applicable worksheets. This resource is appropriate for all users, particularly for girls and women, because it involves teamwork and communication skills, involves hands-on activities that produce a tangible result or product, and uses STEM to solve real-world problems.
