Description: This site follows three eighth-grade teachers as they plan, implement, and assess an interdisciplinary roller coaster design project. Project details, teaching schedules, and activity sequences are offered, as well as classroom layout and technology considerations. A printable scoring rubric and Team Progress Report form are also provided, along with student samples of posters and PowerPoint presentations. In the final section, teachers reflect upon their own experiences and share their thoughts about what makes a successful classroom work. Additional pages provide a framework for using the site (and an accompanying free video) in teacher inservice programs and self-directed learning options that explore problem-based learning. This resource is appropriate for all users, particularly for girls, because it uses inclusive images of girls and women, was developed by women, involves teamwork and communication skills, and involves hands-on activities that produce a tangible result.
