Description: This paper examines the status of women, minorities, and students with disabilities in math and science and the effect that special programs which target these groups have had in the effort to lessen gaps in achievement. Taking a critical look at special programs from philosophical, policy and evaluation perspectives, this paper challenges some of the assumptions underlying special programs and suggest next steps for a research and evaluation agenda. This resource is appropriate for all users, particularly for girls, women, people with disabilities, and ehtnic minorities, because it addresses concerns relating to bias and/or discrimination.
