Description:
This resource contains links to units called Eyes on Herbs, Food for Thought, and Food Preservation. Uncommon Knowledge was produced as part of Voices of Girls, a three-year project funded by the National Science Foundation that helped middle-school-age girls do well and feel confident in science, math, and technology. Each printable unit contains lesson plans for approximately 10 hands on activities, background information, and related worksheets for middle school aged male and female students. In many communities (especially in rural areas), few women are involved in work that is based on an obvious science or math background. So girls do not have pictures in their minds about possible careers in medicine, research, engineering, or other technological or scientific pursuits. A good place to help girls make connections with science and mathematics might be in exploring some common practices that have been associated with women for many generations. For this reason, activities are related to food preservation, nutrition, and home health remedies. From this starting point, girls will uncover other uses for science and math. This resource is appropriate for all users, particularly for girls and women, because it targets girls or women, was written/developed by women, involves hands-on activities that produce a tangible result or product, and uses STEM to solve real-world problems. |
