Description: This interactive website, aimed at students aged 11-14, is a virtual island where users earn money, build and decorate their own homes, and design their own faces while learning science, math, business, and writing skills. The money users earn by succesfully completing problem-based, interactive, open-ended activites allows them to purchase and decorate a house and gain access to other luxuries. Users chat with each other via the face they selected and paid for with the money they earned. Whyville is an on-line community dedicated to learning through exploration and communication. The website includes a messaging system, bulletin area, and a newsletter. This resource is appropriate for all users, particularly for girls and women, because it involves teamwork and communication skills, involves hands-on activities that produce a tangible result or product, links STEM to other topics of interest such as arts and humanities, anduses STEM to solve real-world problems.
