Description: WISE (the Web-based Inquiry Science Environment) is a simple yet powerful learning environment where students examine real-world evidence and analyze current scientific controversies. This video clip shows how science is made accessible by allowing learners to connect new ideas to those they already have. Effective instruction should provide opportunities for students to evaluate scientific evidence according to their own personal understanding, to articulate their own theories and explanations, and participate actively in science learning. The video features girls working on science projects together and demonstrates how to connect science concepts with real world applications (one way to get girls interested in science). This resource is appropriate for all users, particularly for girls and women, because it involves hands-on activities that produce a tangible result and links STEM to other topics of interest such as arts and humanities.
