9-12 Lesson Plans

Topic:All about Aviation
Level: Grades 9-12
Materials: Internet Connection, paper, pencils, materials to make model airplanes- see individual lessons below {tape, cardboard, skewers, fan, glue etc.}
Brief Description: Students will learn about early aviators and some principles off flight. This research will help students in their construction of model airplanes or gliders. Students will read biographies of both male and female aviators and will consider how gender affected their experiences.
Standard: National Science Education Standards Content Standard E: "As a result of activities in grades 9-12, all students should develop 1) Abilities of technological design 2) Understandings about science and technology" (http://www.nap.edu/readingroom/books/nses/html/6e.html#cse912)

Objectives: Students will report specific examples of how aviators use scientific and technical principles in their work.

Steps

1) Allow students to explore the Airplane Design Workshop and Shapes of Flight sections of the NASA Connect website. Ask students to complete the tasks within both of these sections.

2) Ask students to explore the Navigational Vectors website and to complete the pilot test flight.

3) Ask students to add specific examples to their list of scientific and technical issues involved in aviation, using resources 13-15 as references. Example: Aviators need to be knowledgeable about vectors and velocity in order to navigate.
